  • Use a Thesaurus to find the best word.
  • The best word is not always the longest word.
  • Know the meaning of the word you use.
  • Avoid repeating words: so, like, and, because.
  • However, despite, contrary, are all words used instead of but.

Transition Words

 

Openings:  certainly, granted, possibly, before, sometimes, clearly, no doubt, in the first place, basically, point of fact.

 

Between sentences:  similarly, just in the same way, one other, another, also, in addition, equally important, however, on the contrary, just as important, next, along with, besides, plus, most of all, added to, as a result, since, the reason for, the motive, consequently, another possibility, the question is, a solution is, for example, for instance, in other words, furthermore, likewise, a comparison, granted, of course, in general, moreover.

 

Closings:  finally, lastly, afterwards, therefore, hence, in final analysis, in final consideration, indeed, to sum up, to conclude, in summary, the final points, in brief, all in all, finally.
