  • Elaborate.
  • Organize your paragraphs.
  • Use a strong voice.

Your writing checklist

 

1. Underline the writing prompt. Find important words and ideas.

 

2.  Brainstorm words, phrases, images, ideas about the prompt.

 

3. Graphic organizer or outline completed using brainstormed ideas.

 

4. Choose one six trait to work on during your first draft.

 

5. Write a strong thesis or essay statement.

 

6. Choose an opening and write your first paragraph.

 

7. Use ideas and supporting evidence in your 3-5 paragraphs to elaborate. Each paragraph requires a topic sentence, details, supporting evidence (pro and con) and a conclusion sentence. Transitions tie paragraphs together.

 

8. Choose a closing for your essay.

 

9. Check your first draft for spelling and grammar. Is the prompt answered?

 

10. Peer reviews your essay, giving suggestions.

 

11. Use the peer review to improve your essay. Is it a four?

 

12. Write your final draft. Is your voice clear, strong and unique?
