Under
direction and training of the Certificated School Nurse or Registered Nurse
will maintain the health room and health room activity. This position will administer First Aid to
ill and injured students according to district guidelines.
A. Essential Functions
1. Administer first aid to ill and injured students according to the WA State Department of Health “sickness and injuries at school” guidelines and/or the American Heart Association First Aid Guidelines.
2. Determine if notification of the Certificated School Nurse, parent/guardian, 911 and/or principal or return to the classroom is appropriate for a student.
3. Consult CSN for any serious illness or injury, including all injuries to teeth and head, severe lacerations, seizures, rashes, bee/insect stings, suspected fractures, asthma attacks or other breathing problems.
4. Contact CSN when a parent/guardian cannot be contacted, upon request by an administrator and upon request of a teacher.
5. Maintain the health room log documenting all health room activity. Maintain other health room documentation including, but not limited to, health folders, immunization records, medication log, screening results, and accident reports.
6. Assist with health screening which will include helping to prepare and organize the screening day. Duties may include vision screening, and completing and mailing screening referral and other parent communications.
7. Record student self-referrals, parent and teacher referrals for the CSN.
8. Dispense student medications according to the Nurse Practice Act under the direction of the Certificated School Nurse. The CSN must be called prior to the administration of the initial dose of all medication.
9. Direct students appropriately within the school building. This may include being taken to the assigned school nurse, a counselor, the attendance office and/or the principal.
10. Check for head lice and determine re-entry to school after re-infestation.

11. As appropriate under the state guidelines, perform other medical duties as assigned by the Certificated School Nurse and follow building policy and procedures as directed by the principal.
12. Serves as member of the Health Services team of the district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
B.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of computer skills preferred in order to maintain various logs and documentation.
2. Proficiency in verbal and written skills and excellent working knowledge of grammar, spelling and English usage, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
3. Ability to keep timely, accurate and efficient records.
4. Flexibility and willingness to learn new health care procedures under the direction of a Certificated School Nurse (CSN).
5. Ability to organize, set priorities and work effectively under pressure.
6. Ability to exercise sound judgment around medical and confidential matters.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and parents/guardians as well as the public.
8. Maintaining confidentiality and being clearly identified as a Health Services Assistant is vital.
9. Will clearly identify self as a Health Assistant when communicating with staff, parents/guardians and patrons.

High School
Diploma or equivalent required.
V. PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Current
First Aid and CPR certifications.
2. Previous
experience in the health care field
3. Nursing Assistant Certificate (NAC)
