II.        SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

The Behavior Specialist is a related services professional support position.  The Behavior Specialist will collaborate with educators to diagnose and develop behavioral interventions for students with disabilities, kindergarten through high school. The Specialist reports to the Director of Special Education but coordinates his/her work with other related services staff including the school psychologist, social worker, and counselor. 

 

III.             RESPONSIBILITIES

 

A.   Essential Functions

 

  1. Keeps abreast of current trends in the profession and translates appropriate research to practical applications in the areas of counseling, curriculum, instruction and assessment.

 

  1. Provides resources, training, support, and modeling of effective instructional strategies and methods to special education and general education staff, parents, students and other.
  2. Demonstrates a strong foundation in Applied Behavior Analysis
  3. Designs and interprets Functional Analyses of Behavior
  4. Designs and implements multi-faceted behavior interventions
  5. Understands the behavioral characteristics typically associated with Autism, Behavior Disorders, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Intellectual Disabilities, etc.
  6. Ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with parents and professionals
  7. Understands and works with the various support systems available in the community
  8. Understands Special Education behavioral best practices including Positive Behavioral Supports.
  9. Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to handle emotionally charged situations
  10. Ability to train others to apply effective behavior management techniques
  11. Possesses a basic understanding of educational curriculum and instructional methods, including Direct Instruction
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

B.    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities   

 

1.               Participating as a team member in the identification of social/behavioral problems.

2.               Designing, implementing, and following up on behavioral management programs for students to remediate behavioral and social problems.

3.               Participating in the development of the individual educational programs.

4.               Participating as a team member in the evaluation of student progress.

5.               Developing and maintaining psychosocial and behavioral data.

6.               Assisting other professionals with student crisis intervention.

7.               Planning and conferring with the classroom teacher regarding student behavioral, social, or personal problems

8.               Develop in service activities regarding techniques for remediating behavioral, social or personal problems of students.

9.               Assisting the teacher with the development of crisis prevention plans.

10.           Providing training for paraprofessionals with the programs in the areas of behavior management skills and affective education.

11.           Participating as a team member in referring those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.

12.           Assisting with case-management and team problem-solving with other behavioral specialists, agency personnel, and other appropriate professionals on a regular basis.

IV.       MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

1. Bachelor's degree in psychology, education, or related field

2. Valid Washington certification in related exceptional student education area, including school psychology, social work or guidance counseling.

3. At least three years experience in a like position

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

V.        PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

                 

1. Master's degree in Behavior Analysis, Clinical Psychology, Behavior   Disordered,

    Behavior Psychology, Social Work or related field.

2. Graduate work beyond the Master's degree.

3. Five or more years of experience in a like position.

4. Professional Certification and/or Professional Licensure

5.  Experience and/or training with Native American children.
